Ontimeshow 2018AW: Why Do We Need Design Now More Than Ever?

ByONTIMESHOW

For the Eighth season of Ontimeshow, we rotated the number "8" to give it the concept of infinity, because looking back, Ontimeshow has experimented with infinite forms and content for its exhibitions. However, these infinite changes are all directed towards a clear goal: to ensure the designs are presented in the best way possible in order to facilitate more transactions.

As a platform that is displaying products to the market, we really feel that whether it is caused by upgrades to the space or a greater focus on lifestyle, we must design well. Good design lies at the core of our industry. So, in our eighth season, we produced the following short film, inviting people from all backgrounds involved in Ontimeshow - designers, buyers, media, and sponsors, to discuss this topic together.

A total of 338 brands and 26 showrooms were displayed at the four-day trade show, attended by 6,827 people, which included 2,048 professional buyers. Bringing design to more people is the meaning of Ontimeshow. For Ontimeshow, design is both the origin and the business objective.

Of course, as shown in the video, everyone has their own understanding of design. Following the answers of the interviewees, we searched deeper for the answer to "what is design" at Ontimeshow 2018 AW.

"Fashion design is neither purely artistic, nor purely commercial."

Zic REN, Zickness Paris Designer

For fashion designers, finding a balance between creativity and commerce is an eternal issue, especially for emerging young designers. Recongising this, Ontimeshow opened Area H in Venue A this season to showcase the works of 10 young, innovative designers.

In addition, the Young Talent Show in Venue B attracted a lot of attention, and was fully sponsored by Onitsuka Tiger.

Allowing more people to see the design of these young designers is only the first step, and our common goal is for more people to understand and appreciate their design, so that they can attract more buyers.

"Design drives trends, but trends do not drive design."

Echo Lu, Senior Brand Manager of Secoo

Buyers come into contact with design before consumers do. They have sharp eyes. They also determine to a certain extent what products will be brought to consumers and create possible trends.

Ontimeshow 2018 AW brought in a brand-new and large-scale "buyer": Secoo. Secoo is the top luxury goods e-commerce platform in China, and Ontimeshow agreed a partnership with them, jointly launching a page on the Secoo website, where Ontimeshow displays 200 designers.

We believe that this is only the beginning, there will be more different forms of communication in the future to enable "design" to find its appropriate destination.

"In this age, there is no shortage of clothes, but of spirit."

Fashion Designer Nicole Zhang

Compared with young designers, mature designers often want to explore concepts beyond design and business. Ontimeshow also provides such a platform for people to find ways to integrate with art while looking for business opportunities. This season, Nicole Zhang's exhibition in collaboration with the Fab-Union architects and the collaboration between the photographer Luo Yang and the artist aaajiao, served as an unexpected addition to the fashion show for visitors.

Art has always been a feature of the West Bund area of Shanghai. Ontimeshow is not only a commercial show, but also a place to explore new possibilities of the future of fashion with the other landmarks in the West Bund.

"Fashion itself has commercial attributes. Designers' fashion shows at Ontimeshow are not only for the media; they are also commercial events.

Lu Yao, Styling Director of ELLE Men

In addition to buyers, Ontimeshow's other major visitors include numerous editors and members of the media, another important way in which Ontimeshow serves as a bridge between design and consumers. It even serves to directly guide next season’s trends.

This season, Ontimeshow not only invited major domestic and foreign media and influencers, but also partnered directly with a media platform for the first time. YOHO! selected six domestic fashion brands to establish YOHO! National Trend Area to show a collection of domestic trends as part of a Rising China theme, in order to showcase the promise of Chinese fashion design.

"Ontimeshow is a bridge between designers and those who seek them, namely buyers, consumers, and media."

Yeli Gu, founder of Ontimeshow

This is Ontimeshow's mission as a professional trade show and a goal we will spare no effort in trying to achieve. In the future, we will bring more brands, explore more possibilities for design exhibitions, and create more convenient communication channels for buyers.
